Bedside Reach & Proportions Calculator

Bedside Reach & Clearance Ergo-Calculator

Determine the ideal ergonomic physical dimensions for your nightstand essentials.

Preferred Unit:

Minimalist design relies on perfect proportions. A common frustration when choosing bedside essentials (lamps, chargers, carafes, or docks) is buying items that are too tall, too short, or too wide for the nightstand, leading to accidental spills or an uncomfortably awkward reach from the mattress. This calculator helps you determine the ideal physical dimensions of the essentials you should buy based on your existing bed setup.

How it Works:

Mattress Height: The total height from the floor to the top of the mattress (in inches or cm).
Nightstand Height: The height of their current nightstand from the floor.
Nightstand Surface Width & Depth: The dimensions of the top surface

What it Outputs:

Ideal Lamp Height: Calculates the sweet spot for a bedside reading lamp. (Rule of thumb: The bottom of the lampshade should be roughly at eye level when sitting up in bed, usually meaning the lamp height plus nightstand height should equal the mattress height plus roughly 16–20 inches).

The "Reach Zone" Rating: Tells them if their current nightstand is ergonomically optimal (e.g., if it's more than 3 inches higher or lower than the mattress, it flags it and suggests choosing weighted or low-profile bedside essentials to prevent them from being knocked over).

Max Essential Footprint: Takes the surface dimensions and allocates 40% of it for open space (to keep it looking minimalist), giving them the exact maximum combined "footprint" square footage available for their phone dock, water carafe, and watch charger.
